Spelling in China

(English ver.) Inktober day 4 was "Spell" - So it made me wonder, how does one actually spell out a chinese character to someone? A lot of characters share a pronunciation, so how would you go about describing which one you have in mind to someone else? There are various ways:

1. You can decompose the character. For instance 好 can be decomposed in 女 and 子, which both have their own pronunciation, and are likely to be understood by the other person.

2. You can put the character in the context of another phrase. Take 好 again, you can say "是 ”你好“ 的 好" which means, "its the hao from the phrase "ni hao"".

3. My favourite by far is tracing the character in the air to let them see which one it is.

(Ver. Française) Le 4ème jour de Inktober portait sur le thème du mot "Spell", qui prend plusieurs sens en anglais (sort magique etc). Une définition possible est "épeler". Mais comment épeler un caractère chinois? Beaucoup de caractères peuvent partager une même prononciation. Il y a plusieurs manières d'épeler un caractère chinois:

1. Décomposer le caractère: Par exemple, 好 est fait de deux parties: 女 et 子, qui ont chacune leur propre prononciation.

2. On peut aussi placer le caractère dans le contexte d'une phrase, ou d'un terme. Reprenons 好: on peut dire "是 ”你好“ 的 好", ce qui veut dire "c'est le "hao" de "nihao"".

3. Ma méthode préférée consiste à tracer le caractère dans l'air, le dessiner du bout du doigt devant la personne à qui on veut l'épeler.
